Building societies may be restricted on commercial loans
Releases reporting Lord Turner reveal that following the collapse of the Dunfermline Building Society the ability of mutual building societies to lend on commercial deals will be scrutinised. The Dunfermline had signidficantly hiked their commercial book in recent times. Another mutual that experimented with the commercial sector was the Derbyshire who for a brief period excited the market with their Salt brand before disappearing into oblivion once they realised that the proposition was built on sand.
